I certainly think it’s good to look into the legal recourses available to the survivors/victims of Bernard Red Cherries’ abuse. I hope that his more recent crimes will go to trial. I don’t know what the statute of limitations is on what he did to Martha and her family. I also don’t know the statute of limitations on his crimes against his other wives and children. Then there is the issue of an abuser continuing his abuse, searching out and finding new victims. Some survivors feel some responsibility for preventing the abuser from doing the same thing to new victims. There is ample public evidence and testimony that he is a serial abuser with known victims from a span of over 20 years.
While I respect your opinion, I think documenting the public testimony remains an important aspect of making people aware of his past behavior. When multiple people come forward independently with similar stories of abuse, this is significant and his behavior becomes a community problem.
Bernard Red Cherries brought this issue into the public forum through bloggers and DJs. He is the one who chose to make his problems public. It is telling that he denied some charges before any of the victims came forward. His victims also have the right to speak and provide a counterpoint to his attempts at disinformation.
When victims/family have already tried to work these issues out in private but have been forced to flee from a violent abuser, it is no longer a private matter. It then becomes a community or tribal issue/problem. By continuing to verbally abuse his victims on the radio and the Internet, Bernard Red Cherries has also made this a matter for Internet discussion.

Guardian (Betsy Ashby) recently brought to my attention that you could look up IP Addresses on alt.native; didn’t know how but a person more familiar with such things gave me a hand.
On June 12th Guardian posted this on alt.native: Once again my comments are bold and in brackets.

THOUGHTS ON ABUSERS
Having been surrounded by abusers for quite a bit of my life. I notice a certain commonality in their thinking; they play the victim of the abuse they suffered as children as an excuse for why they chose to become abusers them selves, then they turn around and accuse their victims of not being able to get over it.
“You should be forgiving and understanding of me because I apologized” but they themselves have not forgiven their abusers. It is statements like this that victims of abuse often have to deal with- Abusers who project blame on their victims for not being all better an hour after an apology.
The fact is if you have made the choice to become an abuser you have no say in how long it takes your victims to get over it and forgive you…in most cases they will forgive you long before they get over it. There are no magic words that heal people instantly and to insinuate that there are, is to continue to abuse your victims. Some victims may jump right into counseling and rush towards the healing path but for the most part they have to hit rock bottom first. For some it takes years and for others it takes decades. I know people that started the healing process well into their 50′s. And some people never do they walk around like giant scabs that never quite heal, continually cracking and oozing their infection…
Nobody heals at the same rate we all have different circumstances we are like snowflakes or grains of sand each and everyone is unique with similarities.
This is the same for other offenses. Behavior has natural consequences….if you steal from someone. You many have learned your less, and you may be sorry, but you cannot determine when it is appropriate for the victim to trust you again. Or society in general. If you steal or abuse a member in my family or one of my friends or neighbors you do not choose when I forgive and trust you….it may be never. It is not for you to decide and dictate. The same goes for alcoholic and addicts just because you quit for a day does not mean you have earned the right to belief and trust. Every action has a consequence good or bad.
The fact that so many abusers do not comprehend that, is a sign that they have not overcome their abuse nor have they overcome being abusers. Their circumstances may change and they are no longer able to abuse, they are old and frail or more afraid of the law…..maybe circumstance has changed and they are more afraid of their victims! but the core of their being is still an abuser or a criminal.
I think the true sign of one who has overcome their crimes is humility and remorse-not imposing your will on others.
Talk is cheap. Your actions speak more loudly than words.
Having said that I have a great empathy for those trying to overcome their abuse or addictions. I think that even taking the first step is admirable. It is a long hard road for both the abuser and the victim.

As far as our Native cultural philosophy was concerned, we were a part of human culture and society no matter what anyone said or thought. But there was a problem with that when the human culture and society the human culture we were part of was the United States. The victors (discoverers, settlers, real estate developers, government leaders, etc.) can afford that, it seems, as long as they maintain control and feel that they don’t have to face the truth…
At this point in history, Indians are still not accepted as full participants in and members of world human cultural society. If they choose to, they can accept that severly restricted role, but then they will have to tolerate that role’s social, political, and cultural limitations. Or they can be who they are, absolutely and completely

After Attorney General Levi announced the misdemeanor indictments, Wilson and his men had themselves charged in tribal court….
They pleaded no contest, were fined $10 a head.
Unbelievable! Dennis Ickes was prosecuting the case and had no witnesses because he thought he had Fred and Everett Brewer turning state’s evidence.
Hours before they were to testify, they reneged on their plea agreements. Judge Bogue could have jailed them for contempt until they testified, but instead approved the reneging.
Dick Wilson was tried first, separately from his men, with the counsel of John Fitzgerald, a onetime lawyer for the Boston Mafia who had moved west in 1973 after starting his car one morning and setting off a massive bomb. One leg lighter but miraculously alive, Fitzgerald had offered his services to WKLDOC, most of whose members blanched at the offer. But the iconoclastic Mark Lane brought him into the fold, and Fitzgerald was soon sitting in on strategy sessions for the Custer trials. a few weeks later, special prosecutor Bill Janklow announced that he was hiring a new assistant to help with the Custer cases-one John Fitzgerald.
After some protest by WKLDOC Fitzgerald was withdrawn.
WKLDOC could not convince either Judge Joseph Bottom on the state bench or Judge Bogue on the Federal bench that Janklow, as WKLDOC alleged, had illegally invaded the defense camp.
Are there any statistics of how many Indians on Pine Ridge died of high blood pressure…this shit is enough to give a person heart failure…every day I say I am going to write a whole bunch but I cannot because I get too angry and upset.
At the trial of Dick Wilson, Fitzgerald told the jury with a straight face that Wilson was not at the airport on February 26.
The trial lasted four days, and the jury deliberated four hours before acquitting Wilson of all counts. Of the twelve jurors, twelve were white.
So much for a trial by your peers.
On Pine Ridge, the prevailing opinion was that if white lawyers fared this badly when they took Dick Wilson to trial, mere Indians didn’t have a prayer.

Many people have come on my blog or e-mailed me that Eaglewingwoman is really Bernard Red Cherries. I don’t want to state for a fact that Eaglewingwoman is Bernard Red Cherries because I cannot prove it but here is what I will say. Eaglewingwoman is not who she says she is.
However Guardian (Betsy Ashby) of Faux Indian fame, stated that she has talked to her. Of course there is no proof of that and if she did have a phone conversation with her how would you prove that it wasn’t just a faux EWW(Eaglewingwoman?) Hell anyone could claim to be Eaglewingwoman…since she has never offered any single bit of verifiable information. Another one of Red Cherries less than honest/honorable supporters….you can just sort of line them up with their lack of morals and integrity.

and was assigned to the case of Bernard Red Cherries JR Neb/
D.O.C.#37720 in November of 1986 who was charged with initially
Assault with dangerous weapon 2nd degree felony, carries a penalty of
1yr to 20yrs in Nebraska. My job as an intern was to supply to
Attorney with the facts of the charges, as such the initial charges
were amended to false imprisonment in the 4th degree which carried a
sentance of no less than 15mos/ no more than 3yrs. Because there were
(2) two seperate charges of Assault on (2) two adult white males,
hence the information that you have posted is not all as accurate as
you are implying it to be. Now I do know this much to be fact, MR Red
Cherries has never to my knowledge ever been charged in any
Juristiction with any “crimes” against women, or children. The above
mentioned info that you have posted is from a data base that is
readily available to anyone, however it has no mention of the persons
effected. (DID ANYONE SAY IT DID???)Thru the yrs I have had the opportunity to have read on the
efforts of Bernard Red Cherries in his endeavor to “protect” our

You still have not offered an apology(FOR WHAT?) to my dad, that is fitting and appropriate to address the “damage”(NOTICE THE USE OF QUOTATION MARKS) you have caused by perpetuating the “allegations”(QUOTATIONS AGAIN) made against my dad. I am not a Lawyer by no means, but have learned about my basic rights as an individual. (WHAT BASIC RIGHTS ARE YOU REFERRING TO?) Apparently the IP addresses have been used by BRC himself from his bredcherries @….com account and also his myspace account where his screen name was also bredcherries. The site was taken down in December according to one of my sources. Why do so many of the people supporting and surrounding BRC continue to hide and tell lies. It has been almost a week since I have done an Anna Mae post. For various ways…I have to consider that Monica is right about spirits and that everything is happening for a reason. Some dark things are being exposed to light..that is always a good thing eventually, even if there is pain and turmoil involved. We may not recognize the good because we may not be the recipients.
When I last posted on this book the government had pushed AIM leaders to the brink…our government and justice and political system is not fair…it is outrageous in its overt racism…but to become what the colonizer has taught will not and has never worked. Having said that and watching what has been going on in Iraq I wonder if some revolution is necessary for change. Americans are too weak and afraid of their government to protest on that level. I once attended a Wobblies meeting and there was a man from Denmark visiting he said that Americans will rise up when they have fallen far enough. It gave me great hope but then when you read about North Korea….maybe not so much.
Five days after Anderson (a reporter) started raising questions-two months after the beating-U.S. Attorney General Edward Levi announced that Dick Wilson and six of his goons (including Brewer and Dick Wilson Jr.) would be indicted.
In the year before the beating, twenty-six people had been murdered in South Dakota, twenty-three of them had been on Pine Ridge, and nearly all of the victims had been Indians. The murder rate on the reservation was eight times that of Detroit, then America’s most homicidal city.
Yet the national press almost entirely ignored the story.
WKLDOC tried to interest reporters in the more sensational murders, like the case of the Eagle Hawk family, whose care was rammed by goons, killing the mother, her four month-old daughter,and three-year-old nephew. Goons threatened the survivors in the hospital, and the authorities declared the murder a routine auto accident.
But reporters didn’t bite. A few dead Indians in an out-of-the-way corner of an out-of-the-way state didn’t count for much individually, and collectively they were not seen as the alarming result of systemic racism.
The reporters and editors who hastened Jim Crow to his grave would not do the same for bigotry against Indians.

I AM IN AWE OF MARTHA ALVAREZ
I’m not one of those people over 30 who think that the younger generation has nothing significant to say or teach. Martha Alvarez has more strength at age 23 than I have now!! And it has taken me all of my life to get this far! I think that many Indian women have had so much more to deal with in life at young ages that they are pillars of strength and courage. I would never have been so bold and self assured and responsible at her age. She exudes beauty outside and inside there is such an abundance that I imagine it to fly out of her pores blessing those around her….
Here are some comments she recently made on alt.native every single victim of abuse should be reading her declarations….I should put up a page dedicated to just her brave comments and confrontations. She is also a single mother and she had custody of her younger siblings for a time! She confronts her abuser and declares that suffering from abuse is no longer an excuse to pass it on to the next generation!
