FIRE HYDRANT IN HELENA, MONTANA

HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN HELENA MONTANA

Most of the drawings and paintings are Charles Russel but not the cartoons…some of these may have already been up I always think I will remember every single photo I have put up!!

There is a book of Russel’s letters out now…puts email to shame..and reminds me I had better get my rear in gear with my Christmas cards!

IF MONICA COULD EXPRESS HER RAGE AND HURT IN ART (REVISED)

UPDATE: I found the picture of the teepee hanging from the ceiling hard to imagine it with the closeups I took…but would not have the effect without the closeups either…of course it would be better if you could see it in person!!)

She would be celebrated in museums and galleries…white people would flock to witness and then purchase her emotions…they would eat canapes and little petit fours while sipping wine and making witty comments….

This is Rez Art in the art museum in Helena, Montana….not a single bit of it was happy and joyous….

SORRY DOESN'T CUT IT HELENA

Ouch!!! this one was particularly moving to me….all about the land that once belonged to the American Indians…I will never view a real estate guide through the same eyes again.

Manny tribal lands were represented on these maps….I wish I had taken more photos! The creativeness is amazing!

SOLD DETAIL3

I must have forgotten to take an overview of this work of art it was a plastic teepee hanging from the ceiling. The artist had done charcoal sketches put them between clear plastic and sewn it into a teepee.

AMERICAN INDIAN ART

…at the Historical Society in Helena, Montana.

I have conflicted feelings about museums since learning about American Indian issues…that these works of art are in a museum may be painful…but then I enjoyed seeing them so much….

I have never been a big fan of “Indian” art but like a lot of things Indian it was the image of Indian art I disliked…the Indian princess in a canoe or the wolf howling in the moon with an Indian chief…the stuff you see on plates advertised in Parade magazine or on blankets sold along the roadside!

Then I discovered the Indian art of the Pacific Northwest totem poles…how can you not like a totem pole but when you really start looking at it as an art they are even more amazing with their ovals and ovoids and there are artists who carve tables and boxes wall hangings even design clothes in this extraordinary style!

Anyway back to the Historical Society they had a whole room with these incredible items!! I was stealth traveling meaning I was trying to see as much in the little time allotted…so I don’t have details just took pictures and moved on…I could have spend hours just in this room. There were some amusing moments when security and the workers always had me in their sites….you arent allowed to use flash cameras in the museum…and I took a lot of photos…but you can’t use flash to take a picture that is behind glass. I have been to the Smithsonian a zillion times and know the routine only the guards are more used to people taking pictures and don’t get concerned until they actually witness a flash! Small towns are like that…more territorial. Many of the pictures didn’t turn out because of me and not the lack of flash …but these did for the most part!

I don’t even know what these bags were used for and I’m sure it was stated in the info there were many more bags it filled an entire room. I think it is interesting that there is an abundance of horse themes..I don’t remember if that was mostly represented in the room or if I was just drawn to the horses??

GRAFFITI IN HELENA…TOO COOL

If this were in a major city ho hum but its Helena, Montana yes it is the capitol but seriously this is some interesting graffiti…perhaps politics inspires graffiti? I haven’t seen graffiti like this in Medford!

CHURCHES AND CROSSES

I loved all of the old churches in Butte and Helena but the light wasn’t always right and a lot are on film which I didn’t get around to taking in today….I didn’t see a lot of Helena because I wanted to get back in time for a football game and I wanted to be able to leisurely pull over and take photographs if there was any exciting scenery. Most of the landscape photos are on film.

The photo below is actually a theater now and resides in Butte.

CHURCH 5 BUTTE

This is a very cool black steeple I saw only the top in the distance and was immediately reminded of all the talk of the black Madonnas on Ordinary Sparrows blog…it seemed terribly mysterious and I hope the film captures it.

CHURCH BUTTE

This is a church in Helena taken from the art museum. The church sort of looms over Helena I’m not sure if it is oppressive…I was in awe of it and took many close up photos.

CHURCH IN HELENA 2

This little church was in Butte and this is the side the sun was shining on. I loved the boarded up window and of course the white brick!

On top of a Catholic school in Butte was this artwork…I love how they did the brick!
