LAST OF YELLOWSTONE
I forgot to post these!
I have no idea what all the flowers are in Yellowstone but flowers no matter where they root are each a delight!
Big elk!
Leaving the park through the West entrance and heading towards Quake Lake
MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS 4
Last of the Mammoth photos…
Another hat!
I had lunch here so I could recharge my battery. It looks fancy but its really fast food I had a cheeseburger and icecream! I splurged on carbs after all the hiking I did…
The elk own the town!
This isn’t in Mammoth Hot Springs but on the way back to my campsite. Below are photos of the mountain range…
MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS 1
Mammoth Hot Springs are not what they once were….most of them have stopped flowing but there is still beauty in the terraces after the water is gone.
This is a windy area and people lose their hats! I had my new cowboy hat on and even with the string it started to fly a few times. The good thing about a string on my hat is that I can hold the string to keep it on instead of the obvious hand to the hat maneuver.
Another hat!
More to come!
HEADING TO MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS
I had not been to Mammoth Hot Springs yet so….off I went (avoiding the scary pass to Tower Falls….
Well its hard to see it in this photo but there is a little puff where the gas escapes from the side of the mountain
I stop for every one I see and introduce myself!
The valley is beautiful….
This was the scary part I didn’t know about but I talked my way through it…you have a small car….there is plenty of room….you have never driven off a cliff before…..in statement analysis the third person language would indicate a removal of myself from the events!
It sure was pretty though!
FIRE LAKE DRIVE
Fire Lake Drive is a loop off of the main road…with more geothermal pools!
Buffalo chips!
FAIRY FALLS
Fairy Falls is a very popular hike and even though I got there early there was already another car in the parking area . By the time I got back the parking area was full and people were parking on the side of the road. This is a nice hike on a well maintained trail and starts with a walk around a geothermal area. If I remember its about 2 1/2 miles to the falls.
What my hiking book didn’t tell me is that its better to hike later in the day when the sun can shine on the falls.
YELLOWSTONE MORNING
There are from the second morning in Yellowstone, flowers, grazing elk and buffalo, the geothermal pools…great way to start the day!
MY FIRST GRIZZLY SIGHTING
No I wasn’t hiking but hiding behind my car using my zoom. The bear looks small but there were a couple of times he had no problem lifting those logs to search for grubs or whatever lies below then at one point he took off running. FAST. I could see myself not having time to grab my bear spray if I was surprised by one….
BUFFALO HERD
Like I said I never get tired of the buffalo! I sat for an hour in the meadow and photographed them crossing the road. I just love the babies…
DRIVING AROUND YELLOWSTONE
I wanted to take roads that I had not been on before so off I went. The park has numerous scenic side roads or loops less traveled perfect places to fly fish or picnic. The mosquitoes are numerous this year with the extra rainfall….
There is no such thing as too many buffalo…but then I still get excited when I see cows!
This guy was scratching his head on the tree….
There wasn’t this much water at the falls last year!
FOGGY SUNRISE IN YELLOWSTONE 1
Always up before sunrise I drove into Yellowstone to capture the sunrise. I stop at the same Madison River turnout. Its one of the most beautiful views of the Madison River but not many people stop (I like that!) because it is so close to the entrance. Most people are heading for Old Faithful….except for the fly fishermen!
I had never walked the Artists’ Paintpots before and it is in my best Yellowstone Day Hikes book as a place that people overlook. I had certainly passed over it on my first trip to Yellowstone…but then I passed up Old Faithful as I heard it was just a parking lot-NOT! (I went there later in the day)
I got here at just the right time. There was only one other car in the parking lot and they left too soon probably disappointed by the fog but as I was going in the perfect morning fog photo opportunities were just starting!
MADISON RIVER
Three days in Yellowstone and over 600 photos not including the ones I deleted. These are of my Thursday night walk along the Madison River which isn’t too far into the park I didn’t spend too much time as I wanted to set up my tent to survive the serious storms that were predicted but didn’t show up. Double staked it and tied it down. If I hadn’t then the storm would have come!
I wasn’t here five minutes when my bear spray fell into the river and started floating away. Damn I have to get new bear spray! then I thought That’s 40 dollars…..so I jumped in and chased it down. Luckily the water didn’t affect the Nike+ in my shoe.
I love these giant thistles!
ON THE WAY TO GREASY GRASS
I have never been to a reenactment they seem hokey to me. But the Native American park ranger at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument spoke with enthusiasm when I last visited the Monument. I intended to go camping for the weekend but fear of bad storms sent me back to Billings and on the way home I encountered the Calvary headed home after a day of practice. I had forgotten all about it. Even though I was looking forward to spending a WHOLE weekend at home I set my alarm for o’dark thirty. I knew I would be stopping to take photos along the way.
The Bighorn River had been flooded and many on the Crow Reservation have been in dislocated
It was a free day for the National Parks so the Battlefield was jam packed and I didn’t stay very long. The reenactment was held below the battlefield probably where the Indian camps would have been located at that time. Off in the great expanse there is chanting and drums….
As far as I can zoom….
On my way out of the battlefield I spot horses in a corral climb a hill to visit….
Looking back is the battlefield….
I couldn’t decide which one was better…
This is where the reenactment is going to be held…
The erosion from the rainy season has been unreal.
looking back at the bleachers. It was about an hour and a half before the event! I couldn’t even get close to the seating but it turned out better photography wise. But not hearing the Indian version of history. Next year I will sit so I can see the show.
MUSEUM AT LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD
Oy! Isn’t this what they said about Iraq?
the next few photos are of a diorama…
